Ron Palillo; played nerd on ‘Welcome Back, Kotter’

Ron Palillo, the actor best known as the nerdy high school student ­Arnold Horshack on the 1970s sitcom ‘‘Welcome Back, Kotter,’’ died Tuesday in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He was 63.

Mr. Palillo apparently suffered heart attack at his home about 4 a.m., said Karen Poindexter, a close friend of the actor. He was pronounced dead at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.

Mr. Palillo was inextricably linked with the character he played from 1975 to 1979 on ‘‘Kotter,’’ the ABC situation comedy, in which the title character returns to his Brooklyn alma mater to teach a group of lovable wiseguys known as the Sweathogs. Horshack was the nasally teen who yelped, ‘‘Oooh, ooh,’’ and shot his hand skyward whenever Kotter posed a question.

The show was a ratings success and a pop cultural phenomenon, injecting smart-Alec phrases such as ‘‘up your nose with a rubber hose’’ into the mainstream and propelling costar John Travolta to stardom. But the series only lasted as long as a high school education and its end, for Mr. Palillo, brought difficulty.

He said he felt exiled throughout the 1980s, unable to find parts, sinking into depression, and rarely venturing from his apartment. When offers did come, he felt typecast as Horshack.

‘‘While I loved him — I really loved him — I didn’t want to do him forever,’’ he told the Birmingham News in 1994.

Ronald Paolillo was born April 2, 1949, in Cheshire, Conn., eventually dropping the first ‘‘o’’ from his surname. His father died of lung cancer when he was 10, and he developed a stutter. His mother thought getting him involved in a local theater might help.

He fell in love with the stage and overcame his speech imped­iment.

He attended the University of Connecticut and earned parts in Shakespearean productions before his big break.

When he auditioned for ‘‘Kotter,’’ he thought he would be passed over for others who had more of a tough-guy New York look. He said his dying father’s voice inspired his character’s trademark wheezing laugh, and he said Horshack tapped into feelings any teenager could relate to.

‘‘I think he was the smartest kid in school,’’ he told the Miami Herald in 2009. ‘‘He was giving up his aptitude in order to be liked. Then and now, that is a very common thing in teenagers.’’

Mr. Palillo went on to get a host of bit parts in shows from ‘‘The Love Boat’’ to ‘‘Cagney and Lacey’’ to ‘‘The A-Team,’’ and played himself for a time on the series ‘‘Ellen.’’ But ‘‘Kotter’’ remained his best-known acting part, and he focused on stage directing and writing.

His last act in life mirrored his most famous one, in a real-life classroom instead of one at the fictional James Buchanan High School. Mr. Palillo taught acting at G-Star School of the Arts, a high school in West Palm Beach. He was due to return for the school year Tuesday morning, Poindexter said, and classes were to resume next week.

Mr. Palillo leaves his partner of 41 years, Joseph Gramm; two brothers, and a sister. Poindexter said that while her friend might, at times, have resented the shadow Horshack cast over him, he remained fond of the character and knew the part was always more of a blessing than a curse.

He remained close to his costars, she said, and knew how closely fans related to the characters.

Taylor Swift releases new breakup song from fourth album, 'Red'

The first volley has been fired in what will certainly be another meticulously mapped-out campaign to set up Taylor Swift’s fourth album, “Red,” due Oct. 22.
As she did ahead of her “Speak Now” album two years ago, the singer and songwriter unveiled the first single from the forthcoming collection by way of a live Web chat. On Monday, she introduced the first single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” which quickly zoomed to the top of the iTunes Top Songs chart.
The track also immediately generated considerable speculation on who the target of the song might be after Swift said during the 25-minute Web chat that it was inspired by a real-life relationship. Her boyfriends in recent years have included singer Joe Jonas, actors Taylor Lautner and Jake Gyllenhaal and musician John Mayer, many of whom already have figured into her songs. She’s currently said to be dating Kennedy family member Conor Kennedy, and Swift recently bought a $5-million vacation home near the Kennedys’ Cape Cod compound.

She elaborated on the song’s genesis on an interview she gave Tuesday morning on ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America.”
“This guy walks in who is a friend of my ex's and starts talking about how he's heard we're going to get back together,” she said on the show, referring to one of the sessions with her songwriting partners on the track, Max Martin and Shellback. “And that was not the case. So I start telling them the story: Break up, get back together, break up, get back together -- just, ugh, the worst! And I picked up the guitar and [Martin] said, 'This is what we're writing'."
Swift also told her live and video-chat audience that choosing the title for the album “was crazy,  because it was really simple. I wrote a song called ‘Red,’ and thinking about what that means to me and all the different emotions that are written about on this album, they’re all pretty much about tumultuous, crazy, insane, intense, semi-toxic relationships that I’ve experienced in the last two years.
“All those emotions -- spanning from intense love, intense frustration, jealousy, confusion all of that -- in my mind, all of those emotions are red; there’s nothing in between -- there’s nothing beige about any of those feelings -- so I called the record `Red’,” the 22-year-old Swift said.
In contrast with "Speak Now,” which for the first time featured songs written by Swift, "Red" is built from her collaboration with a variety of songwriters and producers over the album's 16 tracks. Swift said that the songs were culled from 30 to 35 tunes written during the two years she’s been working on it.
Because “Speak Now” was the first album in more than 5½ years to sell more than 1 million copies during its first week, music industry observers will be looking closely to see whether she’s able to repeat that feat -- and whether she’s able to keep her track record intact of increasing both first week and overall sales with each successive album she’s released since her 2006 debut, “Taylor Swift.”

Olympics 2012: After sloppy start, U.S. women’s soccer team roars back to outclass France, 4-2, in opener

GLASGOW, Scotland – The first two shots Hope Solo faced on Wednesday found the back of the net, and the match, much like the Olympics, had barely started.

“We weren’t fazed at all,” Solo said of allowing two goals in 14 minutes. “We were ice cold. We knew France was good but we know we’re better.”

Call it confidence with a dash of arrogance, but the fact is that once the United States spotted France a two-goal lead, the world’s top-ranked women’s soccer team and its world-class goalkeeper played as if they had the French right where they wanted them.

“We weren’t stressed out at all,” Abby Wambach said. “We knew there was a lot of time.”

The U.S. women, vying for their third straight Olympic gold, rallied from the disastrous start with four unanswered goals to win their opening match, 4-2, on a mild afternoon at iconic Hampden Park. Alex Morgan, the made-for-Madison-Avenue striker, scored two goals, and Wambach netted the team’s first.

But the game-winner was produced by midfielder Carli Lloyd, the hero of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, who is adjusting to her new role as a substitute.  Lloyd’s powerful right-footed shot in the 56th minute gave the U.S. the lead for good and ended France’s 17-match unbeaten streak.

In 2008, Lloyd used her left foot to beat Brazil in overtime for the gold medal. She had been a regular starter in center midfield and even played all 120 minutes in last summer’s World Cup final loss to Japan. But in three matches leading up to the Olympics, Lloyd was not in Pia Sundhage’s starting 11, and on Wednesday, the coach featured Shannon Boxx and Lauren Cheney in the area.

Lloyd, however, impressed the staff and her teammates by not sulking over the demotion. Instead, she’s made it a point to stay ready and in the 17th minute Lloyd was called to replace Boxx, who suffered a hamstring injury with the team trailing 2-0.  Over the next 49 minutes, the U.S. scored four goals. “She changed the game,”  Sundhage said. “She didn’t start the game but she finished the game.”

With Lloyd on the bench, France scored twice in the span of two minutes. Gaetane Thiney opened with a thunderous strike from 30 yards, and Marie-Laure Delie made it 2-0 from close range after the U.S. had three chances to clear the ball from danger and failed to do so.

Wambach immediately called her teammates in for a quick pep talk that probably included something along the lines of “just pass me the ball in the air.” No one in the history of the women’s game has been better at heading the ball than Wambach, who added to her goal count by heading home Megan Rapinoe’s corner kick in the 19th minute. Thirteen minutes later, Solo aimed a 60-yard free kick that was intended for Wambach but appeared to deflect off Wendie Renard’s back. The ball found Morgan’s feet, and in her first-ever Olympic game, she easily beat Sarah Bouhaddi. France’s two-goal advantage was now history.

“I was really pumped up,” Lloyd said. “When the whistle blew at halftime I said, ‘Is that it?’ I wanted to keep going.”

The French, with star midfielder Louisa Necib replaced at halftime, were neither creative nor dangerous after intermission. The U.S. began to control play and was rewarded when Lloyd struck from 23 yards out. She punctuated her goal with by sliding on both knees near the U.S. bench.

“I wanted to show the bench some love,” Lloyd joked.

Ten minutes later, a defensive error sent Tobin Heath alone down the left flank, and her pass was tapped in by an unmarked Morgan at the back post.

“We were a little shaky in the beginning,” Sundhage said. “But I think it’s amazing the way we responded.”

Bang! Boom! Two quick shots, and the U.S. women’s soccer team had an early hole at the start of the quest for a third consecutive Olympic gold medal.

“I think there was a lot of nerves and stuff going on in those first minutes,” defender Rachel Buehler said. “And we got ‘em out. It probably went as bad as it could — and then we were able to turn it around.”

Soccer always starts early at the Olympics in order to have time to play a full tournament of games. In this case, the Americans were on the field two days before the opening ceremony and 400-plus miles from the British capital.

And they knew that an early stumble wouldn’t be the end of the world. The U.S. gave up two goals in the first four minutes to open the last Olympics in China, losing to 2-0 to Norway. The Americans rebounded to win their final five matches and take the gold.

“After 2-0, I thought about China,” coach Pia Sundhage said. “We’ve been there before and we came back. If you look at the whole tournament in China, we won the gold medal. Now this team is better than 2008. We came back in the game.”

While the Americans are favored to take the title again — and even though the U.S. is now 13-0-1 all-time against France — it was hardly a surprise to see the French make it a game. The teams were tied late in the second half in last year’s World Cup semifinals before the Americans finished off a 3-1 win, and France entered these Olympics on a 17-game winning streak.

Still, the Americans allowed more goals in the first handful of minutes Wednesday than they had allowed in any game since the World Cupfinal loss to Japan. Gaetane Thiney (12th minute) and Marie-Laure Delie(14th) found holes in a supposedly impenetrable defense — a potential cause for U.S. concern as the grueling tournament progresses.

“It’s not the game we wanted to play,” defender and captain Christie Rampone said. “But we’ve got a lot of games ahead of us to try and get our rhythm back.”

Another concern for the Americans: Midfielder Shannon Boxx left in the first half with a hamstring injury and is day-to-day.

“Magic things could happen after a good sleep,” Sundhage said. “So we’ll just wait and see.”

Conquer Everest Climber Killed 4 & 1 Missing

5.6 quake rattles capital of Bulgaria SR

An earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude shook the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, today at 03:00 local time. Panicked residents running into the street. However, the authorities until the morning local time has not received reports of casualties or material damage.

Google Heat rivalry with Facebook

Keyboard shortcuts are a feature I find incredibly useful. Most of our favourite applications offers shortcuts to perform tasks, such as the generic CTRL+S to save or CTRL+B to generate bold text in word processing programs (the "Command"/CMD button for Mac users).

Blogger offers us a range of keyboard shortcuts we can use when creating and editing our blog posts to perform some most-used tasks without having to scroll around to find their appropriate buttons.

The following shortcuts have been tested to work in Internet Explorer 6+, although at present not all of these work in Firefox, Chrome and Opera*:
